John Brewster

John Brewster
DO (Hons) Ost.

John qualified as an Osteopath in 1987 from the British School of Osteopathy.  He initially worked as an associate to gain experience, he then travelled for a globetrotting year, after which he worked as a locum to gain knowledge about how a practice should be run.

In August 1990 Farfield Osteopathic Practice was set up and soon expanded to its present three-partner and associate size.

Initially John’s main interest was the biomechanical side with specialist interest in sports injuries, increasing medical care at Wharfedale Rugby Club as the club has developed over the last 30 years, leading to the present medical room, a close integrated approach with Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy and specialist medical care.  This ultimately led to a player welfare care system for returning to play from various injuries and post-operative protocols with particular reference to concussion.

In the season of 2022/3 John’s warm up for players, which is designed  to reduce the likelihood of injury especially concussion, is going to be rolled out to all levels of the club.  The data gathered as a consequence will be used to further improve player welfare at the club.  There is a video of this and other individual exercises to complement treatment on the website.

Over the years John’s interest in pulling in the benefits of biochemistry alongside psychological or mental effects and how these two areas and biomechanics inter-react, is meaning more blood analysis to see how functional changes within the ranges that occur in blood and knowledge on how to optimise these, leading to a better chemical environment that a person is in to improve their condition. This also shows how to optimise mental health by advice or “homework” that can be prescribed during a consultation, which can also set the individual in a better situation to achieve improved health. This can often be the case in more stubborn, reoccurring or prolonged problems and shows the importance of close inter-referral with orthodox medicine such as GPs, specialists and fellow complementary health professionals.

Most recently John has been doing blood screening programs for companies’ employees and individuals who want to see where modern day life is having effects on the chemistry of the body and how if left these non-permanent changes can become more structural and then referral to orthodox medicine, in addition to some often basic home changes, can mean a change of course away from this inevitability.

The Farfield House website shows  a considerable contribution on nutrition.  As John is a ‘Metabolic Balance’ coach, the use of nutrition to optimise the system from such as pre diabetes and weight advice can also be used to tailor-make the treatment most appropriate.

Commonly as treatment reduces (and most of the time that is 3-6 treatments to achieve betterment), integration with Pilates or home exercises or gym prescription exercises occur. This allows the individual to take control of their problem and keep on top of it, rather than relying on the practitioner to keep “fixing” the problem. The videos on our website have been specially filmed for patient use in collaboration with treatment.

Finally, John’s latest project has been The Relaxing Spine Tube, which is a very simply designed aid for back and neck sufferers to be more in control of their problem and by just 10 minutes a day lying on this comfortable tube, ease pain, improve posture and ease away stress effects. See the website (spinetube.co.uk) for more information.
